Formal ontology and CAD integration with macro parametric approach

2017

ABSTRACTThis paper discusses an ontological integration framework in the context of mereotopological formal ontology and CAD systems. Based on a comprehensive literature review of current design knowledge management and formal ontology research works, the authors propose the integration framework that can incorporate design knowledge with CAD systems. The primary role of mereotopology in this research work is the formal representation of design knowledge for the 3D solid assembly models. Most of the existing research works about design ontology present an abstract form and often require significant additional efforts to be integrated into CAD systems. Thus, this work introduces a formal ont…

Radical innovation by theoretical abstraction - a challenge for the user-centred designer

2016

AbstractIt is generally accepted that scientific disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and anthropology contribute beneficially to design by providing understanding of users’ needs, experiences, and desires. Arguably, however, these disciplines have more to contribute, because they include theories and models that can be applied as design frames and principles. More specifically, goal-setting, visualization, thematization, and conceptual reconfiguration are general mechanisms through which theories translate into design contributions. Actualizing radical design solutions via these mechanisms is discussed: theories provide appropriate means of abstraction, which allows ‘distance’ from u…

Developing design knowledge and a conceptual model for virtual reality learning environments

2021

This chapter focuses on applying design science research for virtual reality learning environment (VRLE) design processes. Six selected case studies are presented in the context of VRLEs. The case selections were analyzed in terms of their contributions to design knowledge. The objective of this book chapter is twofold: 1) for researchers, the design knowledge contributions of case studies are highlighted for future reference, and 2) for developers and practitioners, design principles are presented for the development of VRLEs. The final outcome of the present study is a conceptual model describing the current design knowledge in the field of VRLEs and identifying the research gaps that sho…

Design Patterns and Organisational Memory in Mobile Application Development

2005

Mobile application development is a challenging task for the software companies due to complicated technological and business environments. Patterns have been recognised to be a valuable tool in software development, for they allow design experiences and solutions to be documented systematically and facilitate the communication of design issues. Patterns can be seen as a part of organisational memory, a means to preserve the design knowledge and enable its reuse in later products and projects. In this paper we study how the design patterns can support organisational memory in mobile application design. We present the utilisation of patterns as a dynamic process and analyse their relationshi…

Autonomic Computing through Reuse of Variability Models at Runtime: The Case of Smart Homes

2009

Our research shows that autonomic behavior can be achieved by leveraging variability models at runtime. In this way, the modeling effort made at design time is not only useful for producing the system but also provides a richer semantic base for autonomic behavior during execution. The use of variability models at runtime brings new opportunities for autonomic capabilities by reutilizing the efforts invested at design time. Our proposed approach has two aspects: reuse of design knowledge to achieve AC and reuse of existing model-management technologies at runtime. We developed the Model-Based Reconfiguration Engine (MoRE) to implement model-management operations. Our research demonstrates t…

Performance and energy optimisation in CPUs through fuzzy knowledge representation

2019

Abstract This paper presents an automatic design space exploration using processor design knowledge for the multi-objective optimisation of a superscalar microarchitecture enhanced with selective load value prediction (SLVP). We introduced new important SLVP parameters and determined their influence regarding performance, energy consumption, and thermal dissipation. We significantly enlarged initial processor design knowledge expressed through fuzzy rules and we analysed its role in the process of automatic design space exploration. The proposed fuzzy rules improve the diversity and quality of solutions, and the convergence speed of the design space exploration process. Experiments show tha…
